Posting another mashup this week just in time for Labor Day weekend. “Lean On” is one of those ear-worm tracks that really was everywhere in 2015. I won’t get too wistful, but let’s just say those were better days.
“California Love” obviously needs no introduction, easily one of the best hip-hop tracks of all time. Peak Dre and 2Pac, song is just dripping with good vibes and immediately transports you to driving around LA in a convertible.
I really like these two together for a mashup. “Lean On” does most of the heavy lifting with the beat out in front, but Dre’s production is so perfect that all of the horn accents and synth parts just sit right on top of the mix like magic.
Dre and Tupac’s verses are iconic and also jive well with Mø’s singing on the verses and choruses, and the chorus part has almost a call and response effect with the “Blow a Kiss, Fire a Gun” and “California, knows how to party” lines going back an forth.
Again, I own no rights to these songs, I just felt like sharing since they put a new twist on some old favorites. If by some random chance it gets some attention, I’ll make a more serious effort.
Also, last post I dragged mashups for being easy. This one was not. I did the recording live in one take using a Maschine Traktor Kontrol S4. It was fun to spend an afternoon on the decks again after so many years.
Happy Labor Day Weekend!
