If a pun is the lowest form of comedy (it’s not), then its musical equivalent surely has to be the “mash-up”. They’re super easy to create, rely much more heavily on luck than skill, and they can sound great on first listen, but over time just congeal into a dull groan. Not to be confused with a “remix,” which includes new work and new content from a skilled performer, the mash-up is prepackaged, just combine the ingredients and go, anyone can do it! It’s shake and bake for bedroom DJs.
Hey, sometimes you want Beef Bourguignon sometimes you want Easy Mac, amirite? And in 2020 don’t we all deserve to just take a few plays off and have a little easy mac if we want?
So today I’m serving up a hot plate of mashed potatoes and groovy for your listening pleasure. My favorite OutKast song and my favorite Midnight Spin song together at last, just like peanut butter and jelly in the same squeeze bottle. Rather than keep it all to myself, I thought it’d be fun to share it with you all (until I get a cease and desist from André and Big Boi’s lawyers of course).
